Who is the great public speaker?

So, what’s the secret to being the perfect speaker? Talent or skill? A lot of debate about this!
As for me, some of it, undoubtedly, comes back to natural talent. But practice can make you better.

Our teacher asked us to create own perfect speaker. I think it is some kind of interpretation of us in the near future....NO! I believe it is! :))

Let's start!

1. A successful speaker knows the material very well.
This includes:
  • The right choice of topic of speech;
  • Understanding and additional study of the topic;
  • Ability to focus on the main idea of speech;
  • Logical organization of thoughts.
  • Knowing the material well, a successful speaker can also clearly convey it to the audience
2. A successful speaker backs up his words with evidence

Evidence may include:

  • Facts;
  • Statistics;
  • Quotes;
  • Life Stories.
To best convey them to the audience, masters of oratory use visibility: photos, videos, graphs and charts. Authentic speakers open up and share their failures and challenges, speaking with passion and a purpose that helps to carry the audience.

3. Speaker makes speech expressive.
For this, the following are usually used:

  • Metaphors and comparisons;
  • Stories and memories;
  • Good humor.

One of the main qualities of the speaker is the ability to make even the most unremarkable material vivid and memorable. Using metaphors, stories, and jokes will help.

4. A successful speaker skillfully uses voice and gestures
It is important not only what is said, but also how it is said. Voice and movement are another set of tools for a successful speaker. These include:

  • Voice and speech control;
  • Reinforcement of words with gestures;
  • Use of space.

The use of space means that the speaker walks around the stage, changing the position of the body to emphasize important ideas. For example, it stops if it is necessary for the listeners to think, or slowly walks around talking about something.

5. A successful speaker make contact with the audience
All the positive qualities of the speaker fade if he speaks, looking at his notes, at the wall, at the ceiling, etc. Necessary:

  • Make eye contact;
  • Communicate with the audience - ask questions,show interest in the answers from the audience;
  • Answer questions from listeners;
  • Conduct dialogue, if it necessary.

6. A successful speaker holds steady
This includes:

  • Confident speech;
  • Steadiness;
  • Ability to perform in an unusual environment - on the street or with an interpreter;
  • A worthy response to unforeseen situations.

The light may go out. The projector may break. The technics may be not available. You can make a mistake - then you need to know what to do if you make a reservation. But you should not be confused in any of these situations.

It takes a lot of practice and experience to become a powerful public speaker, actually what we are doing now on Public Speaking! And I believe that I'll do all of my best to overcome the barrier and become a successful speaker!
